Connor McDavid just continues to follow in the footsteps of Edmonton Oilers great and Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky’s legacy.
On Thursday night he logged two assists in his team’s 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, his 59th and 60th helpers of the 2024-25 season.
With the latter, McDavid joined Gretzky as the only players in NHL history to record nine consecutive 60 assist seasons.
Of course, “The Great One,” as Gretzky is dubbed, recorded more such seasons, 13 to be exact from 1979-92 while as a member of the Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.
McDavid was drafted first overall by Edmonton in 2015. His rookie season was the only occasion he failed to reach the 60 assist mark because he played just 45 games.
Barring any serious injuries, McDavid is well on pace to match or break Gretzky’s benchmark. He’s only logged less than 70 helpers twice outside of his rookie year (2017-18 and 2019-20).
On top of that significant achievement, McDavid also became the first player since Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux to record a point in 16 consecutive contests against the same opponent.
McDavid and his teammate Leon Draisaitl both factored on Edmonton’s game-tying goal in the third period, the 85th time they’ve done so. That tied them with Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier for fifth-most all time.
History just follows Connor McDavid where ever he skates. If fans notice the Oilers are playing on any given night, it’s probably a safe bet to tune in and watch him do something unprecedented.
