Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans will be a rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. The two battled at Super Bowl LVII in Arizona just two seasons ago, with the latter kicking off its three-peat bid.
Now, fans are looking for any and all kinds of trends that will help them predict the winner on Feb. 9.
Well, the big game in the Big Easy will be just the fourth time in NFL history where two quarterbacks have met in multiple Super Bowls. Each time, the passer who won the first matchup also followed it up with a win in the second.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Terry Bradshaw beat the Dallas Cowboys’ Roger Staubach in Super Bowls X and XIII. The Cowboys’ Troy Aikman beat the Buffalo Bills’ Jim Kelly in back-to-back Super Bowls (XXVII and XXVIII).
And most fans remember the New York Giants’ Eli Manning upsetting New England Patriots legend Tom Brady twice as well (Super Bowls XLII and XLVI).
Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes came out on top in Super Bowl LVII against Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts, so history certainly seems to be on his side this time too.
On top of that, Super Bowl LIX will be the fifth occurrence in league history where two coaches will have a rematch in the big game, with the Chiefs’ Andy Reid squaring off against the Eagles’ Nick Sirianni.
For Reid, it will be his second appearance in a rematch after defeating San Francisco 49ers boss Kyle Shanahan in Super Bowls LIV and LVIII.
In each of the previous four rematches, the coach that won the first contest also took the second.
Pittsburgh’s Chuck Knoll beat Dallas’ Tom Landry twice, the Cowboys’ Jimmy Johnson defeated Buffalo’s Mark Levy back-to-back and then, of course, New York’s Tom Coughlin bested New England’s Bill Belichick in two bouts.
If you’re looking for any strong trends to influence your picks, this may be the strongest evidence yet that Kansas City’s historic three-peat may be inevitable.
