With a 76-68 win over No. 17 Wisconsin on Wednesday night, the Maryland Terrapins picked up their fourth straight win and a third win over a ranked opponent this season.
According to ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Borzello, this is the third time in the last four games that Maryland has made double-digit threes.
Maryland hit 12 threes total (12-of-24). Senior guard Selton Miguel led the Terrapins with four triples while junior guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie (16 points) hit three long-range shots.
This jumper off the backboard put Maryland up 65-58 with just over four minutes left to play.
Maryland’s defense caused problems all night for the Badgers, with Wisconsin shooting 37.3% for the game. Other than senior guard John Tonje (23 points, 8-of-16 FG), no one else had more than 10 points.
Wisconsin (16-5, 6-4 Big Ten) has dropped two of its last three games after a seven-game winning streak. With a road trip to Northwestern coming up on Saturday, the Badgers need more players to step up to take the load off Tonje.
While Maryland has three wins over ranked teams this season, its three losses to ranked foes have been by a combined 13 points with each of them decided by five points or less. As Maryland (17-5, 7-4 Big Ten) prepares to face Ohio State on Feb. 6, the Terrapins are putting together an impressive resume that should only improve their seeding.
Prior to Wednesday night, Maryland was a No. 7 seed in Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology for ESPN. With another key win under its belt and consistent three-point shooting during its winning streak, expect the Terrapins to continue their climb and potentially get a ranking next to their name next week.
